September marks the beginning of the end of bumble bee season. Summer blooms have come to a close, and you will primarily see goldenrods, asters, and some blazing stars hanging on for the next couple of weeks.
Many bumble bee species have already completed their life cycles and their nests have senesced - meaning they have completed their reproductive output and declined. Other species, like the common eastern bumble bee, hang on later into the season and have just begun producing males and new queens.
Colonies produce queens when they are able to bring in enough pollen. Queens and workers both develop from fertilized eggs. The only difference is how much they are fed as larvae. Once new queen production starts, the old queens will usually switch to laying unfertilized eggs, which develop into males. These males and new queens will leave the nest to mate with males and queens from other nests. Males and new queens are known as reproductives, and once they are produced, the worker population within a bumble bee nest will start to dwindle, and eventually the nest will die.

It is very common to see males and new queens foraging on late-season blooms, and sometimes, even witness a mating event. Sometimes, many males will cling onto one single queen.

Though finding a nest during September is not impossible, it gets more challenging as nest sizes get smaller and smaller. In 2025, we found a Bombus fervidus (yellow bumble bee) nest during the first week of September!
Another thing to watch out for during your Quests are bumble bee queens searching for overwintering spots. New queens will dig themselves a couple of inches into the soil, creating a space called a hibernaculum. If you see a large, digging bumble bee, it may be a queen finding a space to survive the winter, not a bee entering her nest.
